Living in The Moment:  My Trip to Switzerland

September 10, 20238 min read

Going to Switzerland was a dream vacation. It was something I couldn’t even imagine, especially even just a couple of years ago. It was first class all the way.

The scenery was something you see in a movie. It like didn’t even look real to be honest, and the pictures don’t even do it justice. It was just unbelievable. I'd like to share with you why taking a trip is beneficial and its relevance to business.

For those who don’t know, I get very nauseous when I travel. I have a hearing loss in my right ear. I like to be lying down when I travel to prevent the nausea. My husband and I had first seats and thank goodness because it was a long flight. It was like seven or eight hours. This is the first trip I’ve ever taken internationally where I had a first-class seat, and I could actually lie down on the plane.

Kelly sleeps on the airplane.

I’d never thought I could have a seat in first-class on the plane. I thought only first-class seating was for really rich people. Even I sometimes have limiting beliefs, and I needed to prove to myself that I belonged in first class.

The seat was very important to me, and it made me see things differently. It was the first thing that stood out during the trip. A few years ago, I held many false beliefs about the people seated in first class. I believed they were rich, greedy and that I could never be like them.

And that just wasn’t the case. Because I was now sitting in first class. It was such a surreal moment, and I felt super grateful.

My trip to Switzerland inspired me to go out and just do things out of my comfort zone.

We went up on top of this mountain called Matterhorn. We were at over 11, 000 feet in elevation. When I was riding up on the train, all these people were telling me we couldn’t hike down it because we didn’t have poles and the right shoes.

We asked a lady: “What is it to the next stop? How far do we have to go to the next stop?”

She said, “Oh, an hour and a half.”

I decided that my husband and I should get off and go hike.

If I slide, I slide. We’ll support each other during the hike. So, we tried it and it was the best thing that we did there. Zermatt is really cool. So for those that are wondering about Switzerland, go to Zermatt.

If you’re a hiker, it’s amazing. Even if you are a wannabe hiker like me, you should still go there. It’s beautiful. There was snow one mountain. Another had flowers, rocks, and sheep. That was one was my favorite.

A view of the mountains in Switzerland

While hiking on the mountain with my husband, I realized I felt present and alive. Any worry that I had about being sick or whatever else just vanished. I fixed my attention on the melting water from the glacier. I watched the clouds drifting over the Matterhorn, paid attention to my footing on the rocky terrain, and inhaling the crisp mountain air.

This was the first time that I had truly checked out in a very long time. I was like: Wow, I have to do more of this in my life. There were also sheep on the mountain, and they were so cute. They liked their heads scratched. They kind of have the same hair as I do. Even this lady was like, “They have the same hair as you!” I said: “Thank you!”

The sheep are mostly white. They have black faces, and black little elbows. Oh, my God! They are so cute. I even got a stuffed animal afterwards because I now want to sheep for real. They just nibbled the grass. It was just amazing.

It was beautiful, peaceful. The sheep had horns, but they didn’t, but like, you know, butt heads with you or anything. They just wanted you to pet them. They’re cute. They like scratching their butts on the fence. It was just really amazing. I was so present.

And then the next day we went to St. Moritz. It is very fancy. It’s like Aspen. It has all the fancy stores. But there, we biked to different glaciers and different lakes. We got in the water and did cold plunges. It was just epic. I didn’t think about one thing. I didn’t think about work. I didn’t think about anyone else. I just was present and felt alive. It was just magical. The scenery is just like unbelievable. So I highly recommend just going someplace new, making it epic and embracing whatever comes your way. And this is not fancy stuff.

Renting bikes was not fancy. Hiking up the mountain was not fancy. It was just a really cool, cool experience. We stayed at like the fanciest, nicest hotels. They had butlers at these hotels, and it was crazy.

These hotels have the nicest views of these lakes and all that. It’s just beautiful. Our balcony just overlooked the massive mountains. I could never, ever think and dream that I would be here in this room right now. It was just one of those moments where you pause. Entrepreneurs don't take enough time to appreciate their progress or care for themselves. They focus on finding and solving the next problem. It was super impactful. My clinic ran without me. We actually made a fair amount of money while I was in Switzerland, and that’s amazing. I couldn’t even have dreamed of that. I used to think that I would have to be involved with the business. I worked on the business beforehand and put myself on the outskirts of it. I am now the visionary, who thinks on how to keep the business moving forward so that we can keep impacting pelvic health clients.

The people in Switzerland were very nice, by the way. It’s a very clean country. They would leave their bikes unlocked. This was shocking to me. I barely saw a police officer, no joke. In every city I went to in Switzerland, they would have like clothes outside of a store. Someone would shut down the store and the clothes would just be there. They don’t lock up the clothes. No one will touch it. Of course, the rivers and the lakes were just so crystal clear, and it was just really like a natural cold plunge. It was just so, so beautiful. If you are thinking about taking a trip, I highly recommend Switzerland.

I can tell you all the places to go. We did the train ride. It was the Glacier Express train ride. It was six hours long, and the train goes very slow. It’s a very scenic ride. I got nauseous, so I had to put my head down and try to take a nap. But, anyway, it was just beautiful.

Despite feeling nauseous from the travel, the peaceful moments of hiking and biking made it magical. Even with all the, the nauseousness and the travel and all that kind of stuff, I would definitely do it again.

If you’re thinking about taking a trip, it is 100% worth it. The lessons from my trip helped me in my business.

I checked out of work, but I checked on PelviBiz clients while I was in Switzerland. I wanted to check on them. I personally like talking to my PelviBiz people. So, I checked on them. However, I didn’t have to do this becasue I set up my business in a way

I could check in or I could check out whatever I wanted to do for me. I personally like really talking to my Pelby biz people. So, I checked in on them, but I didn’t have to, because I set my business up to where it doesn’t have to be that way. So, you know, I just think that’s very important.

I was doing what I wanted on vacation. I wasn’t worried about PTO. I wasn’t worried about whether I could take more time off for another trip or use sick days.

I decided we were just going to live life. We went out to eat. We can actually afford to go out to eat. Oh, wait, we want to go shopping here. We can go shopping here because it’s okay. When I had $200,000 in student loan debt and was getting paid $62,000 a year, I wanted to hold on to every penny. We couldn’t even go into a store. I mean, no way. We couldn’t even probably stand next to the window and do the window shopping. We weren’t able to afford to have access to these areas.

I can’t say enough about being an entrepreneur and how much it will truly change your life in so many ways. Hopefully, my trip inspires you guys to get out of the daily grind and do something epic.
