What is a habit? How is a habit created? Habits typically are something that goes on automatically in your brain. Ever since we are little kids, our parents and peers ingrain habits in us. Some of us have bad habits and some have good habits.
Most millennials are used to having our parents say: “Eat all your food and then you’ll get dessert.” Well, that is a habit. Let me eat my dinner and then I’ll get a sweet treat at night. Now, is that a good habit? I think some people would argue that isn’t a good habit. But, it’s something that has literally been told to us at a very young age. Our habits come into play during times of stress—whether you want them to come into play or not. We typically always resort back to our habits. That is why it is so challenging for people to create new habits.
I always like to attach an old habit with a new habit. In the morning, I take my vitamins. Typically, I wake up and I get a glass of water in the morning. It’s something that has always been part of my routine. So, because of that, when I drink a glass of water, take my vitamins. Again, the old habit is drinking water. New habit is taking my vitamins. So, the water is going to trigger my new habit. Let’s say you think: “Okay, I’m just going to leave to chance and I’m going to remember to do this new habit today.” The result is that you are less likely to create a new habit.
You will need to repeat a task in order for it to become a habit. For example, if you just do it on Mondays, then it’s truly not going to become a habit because you’re not repetitively doing the same task or doing the same thing repeatedly.
What do habits have to do with business? Habits are going to make you successful in business. As a business owner, habits have actually given me more peace of mind. I’m now in control of my businesses instead of them controlling me.
Here’s my routine: I wake up in the early morning. Keep in mind that I always go to bed by 10 o’clock at night. That’s a habit. If you’re not going to bed on time, make it a habit that maybe you set your alarm that by 9:45 pm. Once your alarm goes off, that means you have to go upstairs and lie in bed.
Women need a lot of sleep because of hormones. We need seven to nine hours of sleep to get our hormones to actually recover. It’s the biggest thing that we can do for our hormones. I’m huge about health and business because it’s my own personal journey. It’s my own personal struggle and I really want to help those who are also struggling with the same issues.
So, let’s get back to my routine. I wake up probably around 7:30 am. I get up, go downstairs, and drink some water. That’s already habit I’ve created. I’m attaching the new habit, which is all these vitamins to help with gut health and, and everything else, with the action of drinking water. Then after that, I now have to go outside for a walk. I hate walking in the cold, but I make myself do it. Just make yourself get some sunlight in your eyeballs. Don’t worry about how long the walk is. This can help you get energized for the day. I would recommend not looking at your phone. This is something that I do, and it benefits me.
When I return from my walk, I just sit there, drink tea, and I just breathe. I’m still not touching or looking at my phone. After I’m done with my tea, I then eat something. After I’m done eating, then I get my phone. My phone is the reward.
If I have my phone, I will not do half of that morning's routine because the phone will distract me. So it is a promise to myself that I have to do these things to get my reward then, which my reward is to solve problems for the day. This also allows me to I then also have boundaries I’ve had to set to where I’m not getting every notification that possibly comes in on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Voxer. This ultimately gives me power. I decide when I want to hit the button; I decide when I want to solve a problem. Don’t give your power to other people.
On Mondays, I typically batch a lot of content. I’m working on social media posts and talking to my team members. I’m talking to Hannah, who helps me with PelviBiz, and I’m saying: “Hey, what’s the plan for the week?” We have meetings. I also have my business coaching from my personal coach. This all helps me build up my energy for the week. I then also have my trainer come in the afternoon and work out with him.
I also take the time to focus on my self-development and come up with my plan for the week. I’m able to time block because I have gotten into the habit of saying no. I know it is hard at first to say no to something, but it gives you back control. Time blocking helps you focus on one task at a time, and it prevents you from being distracted.
If you could hyper focus and create habits that actually benefit you, then you are setting boundaries for yourself. Boundaries are probably the hardest thing for me. I realized people will honor boundaries. The best way to get people to honor your boundaries? You need to stand firm with your boundaries because they can help you create better habits.
Think about what habits are going to be impactful for your business. For me, it’s getting out there and marketing with my community. I need to sleep. I need to eat well. I need to make sure I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Don’t fall into the trap of saying that you are too busy to do something. When everyone says they’re busy, it just means: “That’s low on my priority list and I don’t enjoy doing it.” I want you to think about one new habit that you can put in place that will help your business and personal life. Remember that work and personal life go hand in hand. Think about how you can integrate new habits into your schedule and create boundaries that are going to make you actually maintain those habits. Something else to consider: Think about how you can attach new habits to your current habits.
Let me know on social media how you set boundaries and are working on creating new habits.
